PPL customer: ‘You’re trapped’ by higher rates

Looking to save money on her electric bill, Nancy Feaver earlier this year enrolled in a program offered by PPL Electric Utilities that charged her different rates depending on when she used electricity. The rates were significantly lower than what she’d pay with the flat rate most PPL customers have.

The “time-of-use” plan was a smart move and saved her money through May. But Feaver and several other PPL customers are mad that those rates last Wednesday skyrocketed between 64 percent and 75 percent. Their concern is not just with the sharp increase, but that by the time they were notified they had no time to switch to a lower-cost plan before the higher rates took effect.

PPL warned customers the time-of-use rates would increase in June, but didn’t announce specific prices until May 20. The higher time-of-use rates took effect Wednesday, but even customers who contacted PPL to switch plans immediately could pay higher rates for a few weeks due to delays in making the change.
